What's Your Compelling Offer?

Oops! There it was again. A well-written ad with an eye-catching headline, nice photo, a decent bullet list of benefits...and a big, fat hole where the compelling offer should have been.

Instead of telling the reader exactly what action to take, the business blandly listed only a phone number and website address.

What a waste!

But, print ads aren't the only areas where I see business owners backing away from doing the obvious-that is, giving the reader or listener a compelling reason to respond now, not tomorrow. Another place where my "marketing coach eyes" catch business owners omitting a compelling offer is in their internet marketing.

Women entrepreneurs, in particular, are guilty of this mistake. Why? Because women mistakenly think they're being "nice" by not telling someone what to do.

Come on, ladies! We know we're capable of being in charge, giving directions, and even acting downright bossy. We do it all the time running our households. So, let's not pretend we don't know how to step up powerfully in the same way when it comes to telling our prospective clients to get themselves in gear and hire us!

Mark Fields Decides Not to Use Ford's Corporate Jet

President of Ford Motor Corporation's Americas group, Mark Fields recently told employees that he will no longer use the company's jet for his weekly commute to Florida. It should be noted that Fields has been criticized in recent months when he called out to all Ford employees to sacrifice and added that they will be eliminating more than 40,000 jobs and reduce employee benefits to reduce costs.

He was recently surprised by a local television news reporter outside his home in Delray Beach, Florida, who was asking him to explain how he could reconcile his costly travel expenses with his calls for sacrifice from Ford employees.

Ford spokesman Tom Hoyt has confirmed Field's decision. He said that according to Fields the whole controversy about him is just a scheme to divert attention away from more important issues like Ford's efforts to turnaround its North American automobile business.
According to Hoyt, "He doesn't want this or any other issue to distract the team. This was Mark's decision. The company supported his commitment to his family." Hoyt further stressed that the decision was entirely Fields'.
The use of Ford corporate jet for his private travel was not just a personal whim on the part of Fields' but rather included in the compensation agreement when he was promoted to head of Ford's Americas group in 2005. In order to fulfill his role at Ford, Fields and his family have had to relocate several times to allow him to give Ford his undivided attention during the week while avoiding disruptions for his wife and children.
In place of the company jet, Fields will be using a commercial carrier to continue his weekly commute from south Florida where his family lives.

Mark Fields is President of Ford Motor Corporation's Americas group and an executive of the FoMoCo manufacturer of quality Ford parts. As head of the Americas division, Fields was tasked to develop Ford's "The Way Forward" plan a program developed to repair the ailing automaker. He directly reports to Allan Mulally, Ford's CEO for all matters that concern the company.

Mark Fields was born in Brooklyn, New York but grew up in Paramus, New Jersey. He holds an economic degree from Rutgers University and worked for IBM prior to attaining an MBA at Harvard Graduate School of Business. He was recruited by Ford in 1989 and moved up the ranks becoming the youngest person ever to run a major Japanese company when placed him in charge of Mazda Motor Corporation in 1998.

In the year 2002 Mark Fields became chairman of the Premier Automotive Group, Ford's luxury units which include Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo Cars. By 2005 he returned to the United States to head the Americas division of Ford.

When Mark Field was 45 years old he was named business unit chief of Ford Motor's operations in Americas. It was in December 14, 2006 when Ford CEO Mulally announced the promotion of Mark Fields as President of Ford Motor Corporation's Americas group.

People Who Shouldn’t Be in Sales

I don’t know why, but lately we’ve been getting a slew of calls in the office from people who think lying is the way to get past the gatekeeper.

I’m not talking about stretching the truth, or name dropping. (Those usually don’t work here, either). I’m talking about stupid, bald-faced lies.

The ones used most often in the last month or so:
“I spoke to her last week and she told me to call back.”
“I’m following up on our phone call last week.”

Why anyone would think lying like that would work (unless they’ve purchased a list of Alzheimer’s patients to call) is beyond me. Yes, they may get past the gatekeeper if they’re lucky. But once they do get connected to the person they’re trying to reach, the call will come quickly to an end – without any chance of getting the prospect to hear how the product or service they were calling about could be of benefit.

No one likes a liar. No one trusts a liar. And I can’t think of anyone who would want to do business with a liar.

We are sure that the idea of ugly women who nonetheless possess unbelievable, charming and persuasive powers is not new to your mind. And this doesn't go true for women exclusively, but for ugly men as well. Despite their physical traits that render them totally unattractive, there are ugly people who are endowed with such magnetic personalities that you cannot resist them. For ugly women and ugly men alike, it is obvious that their charisma lies somewhere else than in their appearance.

On the contrary, there are beautiful women who lack charisma completely and risk being practically blanked out, completely obliterated in the magnetizing presence of charismatic and yet ugly women. Where does charisma come from? Can it be taught? It appears that it is something that can be achieved, but only with long years of practice. In short, charisma seems to be an attitude. When ugly people manage to get detached from what their physical appearance means to the society around them and, implicitly, to themselves, they have the opportunity of learning several techniques through which they can practically settle a sort of domination over a specific group of acquaintances.

The most important allies are self-confidence and nerve. But they should not strive too much to the extent where their endeavors are rendered visible. Ugly people should keep a close eye on the others, because there are many, even among their groups of friends, who are keeping them under close observation and noticing their every reaction to what is being said and done. Nonetheless, our brief introduction to charisma does not intend to lead you into assuming that all ugly people are charismatic. On the contrary, charisma is something that very few people – ugly and beautiful alike – can claim they own. However, the entire point if that even ugly women and ugly men can be charismatic. There is no rule stating that charisma is owned by the beautiful and handsome ones exclusively.
